Holiday Parade, Nov. 28th

The Holiday Parade is Friday, November 28th at 7 pm and the CHS band members and the LPMS 8th grade band will join together to provide band music for the parade.

Band members are to dress in lights, antlers, santa hats, etc. for the parade. This is a very joyous occasion for the Corvallis community with lots of people and we will be the only live band.

The band will meet at SW 4th and Washington across the street from Baskins Robbins.

Students are reminded to take their instruments home next Wednesday, Nov 26th, from school.

5:30 p Load sousaphones and drums (but not in Mr. Price's truck so he can greet the bands)
6:00 p arrive at parade site
6:15 p warm up, place in ranks and rehearse the music
7:00 p The parade begins and will end at the court house at Jackson and 4th streets.

This year the band will march up 4th street, and periodically pull over to the side and play our set of 4 pieces in each block, then get back into the parade and march to the next block.

We will play the whole parade and it will last about one hour.

After the parade, equipment will be returned to CHS.

Drum line members will hopefully have enough members to pull off some of their routines as we march.

See you Friday, the day after Thanksgiving!

Remember: 'Tis the season...band concerts are Thursday, Dec 11th at CHS and Tuesday, Dec 16th at LPMS, both at 7 PM.

Seeking Sponsors!

Friends of CHS Band is still looking for a few more sponsors for the band t-shirts and programs. For $100, your logo, event, special dedication will be prominently displayed on the back of the WIBC t-shirt, the basketball pepband t-shirt and in all the concert programs.

Do you own or know of someone who owns a business? Do you have a special someone or event you would like to recognize in place of a logo? Not only will you receive advertising, you will be supporting CHS's growing band program.

The money raised by sponsors also helps provide t-shirts for those students who may not be able to contribute the entire cost of their t-shirt.

For more information, please contact Yuki Tanaka at: yuki.fcb@mac.com

2008-2009 CHS Blue Tones Jazz Band

The CHS Blue Tones Jazz Band will begin another year of jazz music. Rehearsals will be 3 days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 6:45 am to 7:25 am.

New members, new music and new activities will be built into our expanding program. One of my goals this year is to create smaller ensembles within the Blue Tones. We will be invited to play more venues with our smaller groups.

Other changes:
• New ‘uniform’
• More festivals
• New music
• German Jazz Band visitation in the spring
• New Members
• Linus Pauling performance

The Blue Tones will be fee-based as in the past. Rehearsals will be September to June.
The fee schedule will be:
One annual payment: $260.00 = $260.00 Annual Cost
Semester payment: $135.00 = $270.00 Annual Cost
Monthly payment: $30.00 = $300.00 Annual Cost
(Checks are Payable to Marshall Price)

I am looking to a great year of creative jazz music and lots of fun with each of you,

Summer Camp Update

The Second Annual 2008 Summer Youth Band Camp was held at CHS this summer July 21 – July 30, 2008. Twenty-five students, 6th-11th grades participated from Linus Pauling Middle School, Cheldelin Middle School and North Albany Middle School.

The members rehearsed four days and then presented 3 concerts at the Riverfront Park, the Saturday Market and at Corvallis High School. The camp concluded with an evening of miniature golf. The music was well-received and band performed three excellent concerts.

A big THANK YOU to the Friends of CHS Band for sponsoring the band camp! A special thank you to Yuki Tanaka for designing this year’s colorful t-shirt. Next year the camp will be held July 20-July 29, 2009. The camp plans to attend and perform at the Benton County Fair next summer.

NOTE- No Pep Band this Friday, 8/29

Due to the upcoming holiday there will be no Pep/Marching Band Camp this Friday! Have a safe and enjoyable weekend!

Order shirts NOW!

The first week of Pep/Marching Band Camp has been a great success!
They are marching on the field already and sounding like a band!

We appreciate the commitment to excellence, patience, and hard work of all the musicians and especially from Mr. Price, Jenna Miller, Sean Hunter & Brandon (on loan from OSU’s percussion department) and this year’s section leaders: Claire Froelich, Nathan Lochner, Daniel Cespedes, Angelica Martinez, Emily Harvey, Annika Gilray, Alissa Wall, Emily Schroff, Forrest Bice & Emily Smith.

We are looking forward to seeing more participants during this final week.

All band students are welcome and encouraged to attend as often as possible!

Our first home game is September 12th and it takes time to get the shirts ordered and embroidered with our logo.

Note: All students will need a polo shirt, not all students will need a sweatshirt. See the order form.

We have turned in an order for only 33 shirts so far and need to get the remaining sizes for the last order ASAP.

See the link for Uniform Order Form.

Please direct any questions to Mr. Price or the Board at friendsofchsband@gmail.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Positive comments to share!

I’m Ken Chaney, director at Crook County High School, and just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your group. My kids talked about the last piece that you did most of the way home and I was wondering what the title/composer were as I can’t remember. Thanks, and again, great job.

Pep Band 2007~08

The CHS Pep Band completed another year of ‘service’ to the CHS athletic teams.
The Pep band began in late August and performed at every home football game last fall. They continued their support for the CHS community by attending almost every basketball game, beginning last November and ending in March.
This year the regular basketball season for the girls and boys teams was extended. Both teams qualified for their state tournaments. The Pep Band traveled to Portland on March 5th for a mid-day game at University of Portland to support the girls. Though the girls did not win that game, they did win the next two games and placed 4th in state!
The next week the Pep Band traveled to all three games at The Pit at U of O to support the boys team, which placed 2nd in the state. The school also won the Sportsmanship Award this year and the band was a factor. The band received many positive comments from the OSAA, the Eugene Active 20-30 Club and U of O officials for their excellent music and decorum. The band received comments like: “I thought they were a college band,” “they were fun to watch,” they play great music,” ‘they were very well behaved, very easy to manage…” Congrats to the CHS pep band! And a big congrats to the Pep Band student directors this year, Brian McFadden and Andrea Kozak. Wow! What a leadership team!

March Concert

On Thursday, March 13th, the Corvallis High School Bands presented a concert. The concert was opened with a proclamation by the City of Corvallis Mayor, Charlie Tomlinson. The proclamation declared an official observation as March is Music in Our School month established by the national MENC. This year’s theme is Music Touches Lives! Following the proclamation by the Mayor, all three CHS bands performed.

The combined Concert and Symphonic bands presented their three pieces they have prepared for the District Band Festival on March 18th. The three pieces demonstrated their musical growth this year with Soar Like an Eagle, Hymn from Vespers and To Challenge the Sky and Heaven Above. The composer for Soar Like an Eagle dedicated the piece to flying a glider with the feeling of air turbulence, the sound of a flock of birds and the soaring updrafts. Rachmaninoff’s Hymn is a beautiful piece from the Russian Orthodox Church with the chant-like melody set in a band arrangement. To Challenge… is dedicated to an area in Huntsville, Alabama and the NASA space center that develops rocket boosters. This set of music was selected to meet the criteria for band festivals. Their concert performance was very good and the music was very exciting, even “uplifting.”

The CHS Blue Tones, fresh off their participation with the Essentially Ellington program out of Lincoln Center in New York, performed four charts with various solos by Dylan Garity, Joseph Kleinhenz, James Ingalls, Claire Froelich, Michael Grant, Aaron Mock, Stephan Smith, Brian McFadden and Alice Anderson.
The Blue Tones performed Now’s the Time, The Mooche, Steppin’ Around and One Mint Julep. The Blue Tones are looking forward to their next upcoming gigs: Jazz Night, Jazz Band Dance and the final concert on May 21st.

The CHS Wind Ensemble performed three pieces preparing them for the upcoming band festivals at Districts and League. They performed Emperata Overture, Salvation is Created and Rumble on the High Plains. Their performance was stunning, from the great brass fanfare in the beginning of Emperata, to the rich and majestic and full mature sound in Salvation to the closing piece with the exhilarating percussion. Their performance was very rewarding, very fulfilling, and very satisfying.

Sunday

The OMEA District XI Band Festival

On Tuesday, March 18, 2008, the OMEA District XI Band Festival was held at Crescent Valley this year.
The Friends of CHS Band and the CHS band students were the event management team. What a wonderful job they did all day! The other directors were very impressed with the organization of the event. The festival began sharply at 8:30 am with City of Corvallis Mayor Charlie Tomlinson proclaiming March as Music in our Schools month. There were eleven groups this year in the band festival.
The CHS Wind Ensemble, for the first time in decades, received ‘state qualifying scores’ of 78, 79 and 74. The members of the band were very excited! (And so is the director.) The band will submit their scores and recording to the OSAA for consideration to state which will be held at OSU on May 8th. This is a very exciting achievement for member of the CHS Wind Ensemble. They have worked very hard this year to achieve this level of performance.
Congratulations to them as they prepare for the Mid Valley League Festival hosted by CHS at CHS on Thursday, April 10th.
